Getting Heard in a Meeting

by Terry
(MI, USA)

I used to have a hard time getting heard in meetings. Here's a few things I found that helped me:

* Don't smile or nod your head in agreement with a long winded speaker, that only encourages them. Maintain a flat expression ( not blank or puzzled).

* Hold up your hand with the stop signal, especially if the talker is going on and on. Then say, "I would like to say something."

* If cut them off. Extroverts expect it. After all, they do it to you.

* If they cut you off, in a strong voice say, "I am speaking and would like to finish my thought."

* Prepare and make your comments with confidence. People tend to disregard remarks made tentatively.

* If you miss your opportunity in the meeting, don't hesitate to talk to people afterward. Bosses need to know that you were listening and thinking.
