Goal Statement Examples

I'm going to show some Goal Statement Examples to help you write your goals. But this should only be done after you've figured out what goals you want to reach. You can discover your goals by completing the 3 methods of goal discovery: brainstorming methods, Question and Answer life review and Visualization

After you have done each of the 3 methods listed:
brainstorming
Question and Answer life review
Visualization,
review everything. Look for themes or trends. Find things that seem to repeat. Does there seem to be a common thread?
Do many disparate things have something in common? Research? Religion? Risk? Family? Communication? People? Independence? Do you secretly have the heart of an adventurer? Is family the most important thing for you? Do you crave increased spirituality?

Try writing down your mission statement, your life plan, your purpose in life.

Wait a couple of weeks and go through these methods again using what you discovered the first time through. Each time you go through one of the exercises, you gain a deeper understanding of your self and your possibilities.

Rewrite and refine your life purpose.

S.M.A.R.T. goals

Specific: Do you know exactly what you want to accomplish with all the details?
What, Where, How, Why.

Measurable: Are you able to assess your progress?
How will you know if you're making progress or reached your goal? If you can't measure it, the goal is too vague. If you have a difficult to measure goal like "Improving my marriage" you need to make sub-goals of the different aspects of your marriage, and these must be measurable. Ex. "I will have a conversation with my spouse at least once a week about our financial goals to make sure we have the same priorities."

Attainable: Is your goal within your reach given your current situation?
Don't set a goal of loosing 50 lbs. in one week. A goal of 2 lbs a week is more likely to be reached without becoming discouraged.

Relevant: Is your goal relevant towards your purpose in life?
There are 2 aspects of relevance:
  • Your personality.
if a weight-loss friend thinks your goal should be to run a marathon but you Hate running, competition and the outdoors, choose a different goal. Maybe to complete a full hour of aerobics without stopping. Make it relevant to you or you'll quit early on.
  • Your life goals.
You want to create goals that are in-line with your personal mission statement or your purpose in life. If you want to stay healthy, you don't want to set a goal to win pie eating contests.
Time-Sensitive: What is the deadline for completing your goal?
A goal without a deadline is just a dream.

Reach your Personal Goals
goal setting

Now the hard part, setting real goals based on what you've learned. You should have some pretty good ideas after all the exercises.

Set a goal for each area of your life. Be Specific and positive. Avoid words like "don't", or "stop". Be clear and concise. Include a deadline.

Career Goal Statement Examples:

  • By Jan. 1 20__, I will be earning $_____ as _______________.
  • By Jan. 1 20__, I will be earning $50,000/year as a journalist reporting on environmental issues.
  • By Jan. 1 20__, I will be earning $500,000/year as CEO of a retail chain.
  • By my birthday 2020 I will be retired with a secure retirement fund and volunteering to work with children.

Family Goal Statement Examples:

  • I will be married to wonderful caring man by Jan. 1 20__.
  • I will spend at least 2 weeks per year on vacation doing activities with my family.
  • I will attend everyone of my childrens' school events this year.
  • I will go out for dinner with my spouse at least once a month.

Spirituality Goal Statement Examples:

  • I will become a deacon in my church by Jan. 1 20__.
  • I will have an 'out of body' experience through ZEN Meditation by Jan. 1 20__.
  • I will have read the Bible, cover to cover, by Jan. 1 20__.
  • I will meditate 30 minutes everyday.

Health Goal Statement Examples:

  • By Jan. 1 20__, I will be at the recommended weight for my age, height and body type.
  • By Jan. 1 20__, I will be able to run 3 miles without stop.
  • I will run in the 20__ Boston Marathon.
  • By April 1 20__, I will be able to bench press 200lbs.

A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.
- Mahatma Gandhi

You can make these goal statements into Intentions to make them even more powerful.

You will probably want to break down some of these down into a number of smaller goals. What steps do you need to reach each one? Complete college education? Save $10,000 this year? Complete the first 5 books of the Bible this year?

Do this whole process at least once a year to keep on track and to adjust for your personal growth. You will grow and change as you reach each goal. Then create new ones.

Personal growth never ends.

Take these Goal Statement Examples and make them your own. Review them often.
